I recently had the opportunity to interview Levin Nock, PhD, Senior Technical Manager, DesignLights Consortium (DLC), for an article about the DLC’s new LUNA requirements I’m writing for the June issue of ELECTRICAL CONTRACTOR. Transcript follows.

The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) published NEMA LS 20001-2021, White Paper on Unified Glare Rating (UGR). This new white paper explains the original intent of UGR, its proper uses, and common misuses.

The Design Lights Consortium (DLC) released LUNA Versions 1.0 Technical Requirements for outdoor LED luminaires. Application efficiency, visual comfort, color, control, and optical control are all key considerations when selecting a quality outdoor lighting solution today for new construction and upgrade projects. While this has certainly increased complexity, it has also enhanced opportunity for electrical professionals willing to invest in knowledge and stay on top of what’s new.

Using specialized nanoparticles embedded in plant leaves, MIT engineers have created a light-emitting plant that can be charged by an LED. After 10 seconds of charging, plants glow brightly for several minutes, and they can be recharged repeatedly.

SOLTECH’s SUNLIKE solar luminaires offer fully integrated outdoor area lighting with lumen packages up to 9,000 lumens. The product received gained UL listing under UL’s new 8801 solar luminaire outline of investigation.

LightFair recently announced the 11 mentees in its first annual mentorship program, a six-month program which enables emerging lighting professionals to connect with experts in the industry to learn about lighting design and architecture.

The DesignLights Consortium (DLC) has released for comment the second draft of technical requirements for outdoor LED luminaires that not only save energy and meet the DLC’s Solid-State Lighting (SSL) Technical Requirements, but also include attributes that limit light pollution, sky glow and light trespass. Comments are due October 22.
