DLC Releases Final V2.0 Horticultural Lighting Technical Requirements

The DesignLights Consortium (DLC) has released the final version of its Technical Requirements for LED-based Horticultural Lighting: Version 2.0, an update that will continue the industry transition from traditional lighting data and metrics to horticultural-specific lighting data and metrics that best represent horticultural lighting performance. The changes have an effective date of March 31, 2021.

The Lighting Research Center (LRC) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute is currently examining a range of UV disinfection technologies. To launch the project, the LRC administered an online survey asking about people’s experiences with and concerns about UV disinfection products.

Kobe University and Ushio Study Filtered 222 nm Far UV-C as Disinfection Method

Ushio Inc. and a research group led by Dr. Ryosuke Kuroda, Chairman and Professor of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Kobe University Graduate School of Medicine, have completed a research study that shows that irradiation of filtered 222nm UV-C light on human skin reduces bacterial counts while causing no injury. This is the first study on the safety of 222nm far UV-C light conducted on humans.

LRC Survey Suggests More Daytime Light Delivers Better Sleep and Mood

The Lighting Research Center (LRC) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute is investigating the impacts of working from home or quarantining indoors due to the COVID-19 pandemic on individual daily light exposures, and how this may be affecting sleep quality and psychological health. In May 2020, the LRC invited people who had been staying home due to the pandemic to complete a short survey about their sleep, mood, and daily light exposure. A total of 708 people responded, which some interesting results.

LightingEurope Calls for UV-C Products to be Allowed on EU Market

LightingEurope endorsed the recent UV-C safety guidelines published by the Global Lighting Association (GLA) and called on European Union Member States to ensure UV-C products can continue to be placed on the EU market.
