I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Ed Huibers – Head of Business Development LiFi-systems at Signify (formerly Philips Lighting). The topic: Light Fidelity wireless network communication, or Li-Fi. The interview informed an article I wrote for the December 2018 issue of tED Magazine.

The New York City Section of the Illuminating Engineering Society (IESNYC) awarded its annual Thesis Prizes to Jessica Collier, Master of Fine Arts in Lighting Design, Parsons School of Design at the New School, to Chonlatorn (Tan) Pornpraphan, Master of Professional Studies in Lighting Design – New York School of Interior Design (NYSID), and to Olivia Privitera, Master of Science in Lighting, Lighting Research Center, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) School of Architecture.

LIGHTFAIR kicked off with the LFI Innovation Awards, which honors innovative new lighting products introduced over the previous 12 months. The Most Innovative Product of the Year award went to the NU Vector Series downlight Alphabet Lighting, a division of LEDRAbrands. This downlight offers dynamic beam shaping, full tilting, and full wireless control via an app or wall control.

Industrial lighting manufacturer Appleton recently sent out a press release identifying five key trends in that sector, summarized here.

The technological shift to LED is changing maintenance practices but not eliminating maintenance. The result is a search for new best practices, incorporating new elements such as controls into maintenance, and ensuring there qualified personnel able to maintain these systems. Three experts comprised a panel that discussed these and other issues at the National Lighting Bureau’s Annual Lighting Forum. Click to watch the video.
