Products + Technology

By Todd Louthain, Owner/Business Development, Coex 3D 3D printing, also known as additive manufacturing, has emerged as a transformative technology, revolutionizing the way products are designed, developed, and ultimately brought to market.  By enabling the rapid and cost-effective creation of physical prototypes, 3D printing empowers innovators to iterate quickly, reduce development time, and ultimately bring [...]

Nichia has launched GigaWhite, an ultra-bright SMD white laser diode surface mount device (SMD) created by combining a blue laser diode (LD) and phosphor. It was developed for automotive headlights, specialty lighting, and industrial lighting. Nichia’s technology has achieved uniform light with less color irregularity. Taking advantage of the characteristics of its ultra-high luminance, [...]

LG plans to unveil two smart lamps that double as indoor gardening systems at CES 2025, this week. These new products combine lighting and plant-growing capabilities, offering a solution for urban dwellers with limited space. The first product is a floor lamp with an integrated gardening base. This multifunctional device can accommodate up to 20 [...]

Z-Wave Long Range (ZWLR) offers significant benefits for the lighting industry, particularly in extending the reach and capabilities of smart lighting systems: Extended Coverage: ZWLR provides a maximum wireless range of up to 1.5 miles when operating at full power. This extended range allows for the integration of lighting systems across larger properties, including [...]

The Smart Surfaces Coalition has launched a peer learning network to help cities increase climate resilience through “smart surfaces” infrastructure. This initiative, announced on Monday, aims to connect city staff and provide them with valuable resources to implement climate-resilient solutions. Smart surfaces, as defined by the coalition, include reflective, porous, and green urban surfaces, as [...]

IBM has unveiled groundbreaking research in optics technology that could revolutionize how data centers train and run generative AI models, using light instead of electricity. The company’s co-packaged optics (CPO) innovation aims to replace electrical interconnects in data centers, offering significant improvements in speed and energy efficiency for AI and other computing applications. IBM [...]

The LED revolution has given us micro-luminaires, micro-LEDs, and smaller drivers. Everything can be miniaturized, so why not louvers? That’s what QTL (formerly Q-Tran) has done with their new VERS-NANO-LOUVER (11). The product features a co-extruded lens with integrated louvers that provide 35° viewing angles, delivering exceptional glare control ideal for direct view applications. The [...]

I previously wrote about the potential of liquid cooling for high power LED luminaires, here. Liquid cooling is becoming increasingly popular for AI servers in advanced data centers, the charging cables for high-powered Level 3 EV chargers, and even next gen EV batteries. Traditional air-cooling methods can no longer meet thermal dissipation requirements for these [...]
