Two Presentations To Consider At LightFair 2025

Two Presentations To Consider At LightFair 2025

It’s less than two weeks until LightFair in Las Vegas, NV. I’m looking forward to it, but not just for the trade show. I’ll also be part of two presentations on topics that I think are important. In each conference sessions, I get to co-present with an industry friend and veteran lighting consultant.

Wednesday, May 7, 2025:

Session: Two Curveballs For Lighting & Energy: AI & Mercury Lamp Bans

8:30 AM – 9:30 AM

I co-present with Peter Brown.

Course Description:

Two new forces having dramatic impacts on lighting & energy:

  • A wave of AI data center (DC) construction with unprecedented energy requirements; increasing from 100MW (2021) to 5,000MW(2024). 1,000MW equals output from a nuclear power plant, increasing strain on the grid. Electricity costs will rise, increasing value of reducing user usage in existing buildings. What will provide cost-effective savings?
  • Mercury lamp bans are driving significant lighting retrofit activity in 10 states + Canada. The US has committed to banning fluorescent lamps, nationally, by 2027 (Minamata Convention). Will this happen, and how will lighting markets be impacted?

Thursday, May 8, 2025:

Session: Update: LED Lamps and Luminaires at End-of-Life

8:30 AM – 9:30 AM

I co-present with Jeffrey Schwartz.

Course Description:

LEDs contain toxic materials such as arsenic among dozens of others of others whose long-term effects are unknown. Despite energy savings and long life, LED lamps and luminaires are NOT part of a sustainable solution unless we solve the end-of-life problem. Tossing products into landfills is harmful, and not a good solution. This presentation will address the problem, LED recycling progress made since Mr. Schwartz’s 2023 presentation, and overall efforts to make luminaires more sustainable through the use of recyclable materials.

I invite you to attend either or both of these conference sessions at LightFair, next month. LightFair registration is available here. Safe travels!
