Fluorescent Bans Start January 1st In Many States

Ten states and Canada have passed laws banning most fluorescent lamps from being sold. The effective date (start date) for many of these fluorescent bans is January 1, 2025, in just a couple days. These states include:

  • California: CFL pin-base & linear fluorescent effective 1/1/25. CFL screw-base already active.
  • Colorado: CFL screw-base, CFL pin-base, & linear fluorescent effective 1/1/25.
  • Hawaii: CFL screw-base effective 1/1/25. CFL pin-base & linear fluorescent effective 1/1/26.
  • Minnesota: CFL screw-base effective 1/1/25. CFL pin-base & linear fluorescent effective 1/1/26.
  • Oregon: CFL pin-base & linear fluorescent effective 1/1/25. CFL screw-base already active.
  • Rhode Island: CFL pin-base & linear fluorescent effective 1/1/25. CFL screw-base already active.
  • Vermont: CFL screw-base & linear fluorescent already effective.

The State and Canadian fluorescent lamp bans are driving significant lighting retrofit activity in those affected areas, according to linear lighting retrofit manufacturers, as well as lighting retrofit contractors that I’ve spoken to.

More details on the fluorescent lamp bans can be found here.
