New NEMA Standards For BABA Compliance & EV Chargers

NEMA has introduced two new standards. One aimed at evaluating Build American Buy America (BABA) compliance, and the other to define how electric vehicles transfer power back to the grid through EV chargers. These standards impact the lighting and EV charger industries by addressing supply chain evaluation, and electric vehicle supply equipment.

Make it American Process Standard: This standard establishes a framework for companies to evaluate their internal supply chains for compliance with Build America Buy America (BABA) requirements. It helps companies assess and document compliance or seek waivers for infrastructure projects receiving federal funding. This new BABA evaluation standard can be purchased here.

Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE) Power Export Permitting Standard: This standard is for accelerating electrification by defining how power is transferred from electric vehicles back to the grid. It covers key domains such as communications and cybersecurity. This standard will be available for download soon on the NEMA website.
