The California Transportation Commission has recently allocated $3.8 billion in funding for various transportation infrastructure improvements across the state. This significant investment aims to enhance bridges, highways, rail systems, and freight corridors throughout California.
The majority of this funding, approximately $3.5 billion, comes from the federal Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), which was passed in November 2021. An additional $330 million is sourced from California’s Senate Bill 1, enacted in 2017 to address road repairs and other transportation infrastructure needs. This state-level funding is generated through a gas tax that provides about $5 billion annually.
The allocation will benefit around 600 local governments and regional transportation authorities across California. Since the IIJA’s passage, the state has received over $46 billion in federal infrastructure funding, highlighting the significant impact of this legislation on California’s transportation landscape.
Hypothetically, if 0.5% of the funding was spent on lighting, that would be $17.5 Million of transportation lighting.
