What To Know About Universal Automation

Universal automation in building automation systems (BAS) refers to a new standardized approach that brings software-defined, vendor-agnostic control to building management and automation. Universal automation can also be applied to industrial automation systems, but this article will only address universal automation use in BAS. Here are key aspects of universal automation in the context of BAS:

Software-Defined Approach

Universal automation decouples software from hardware, allowing building automation software to run on any compatible hardware platform. This enables greater flexibility and efficiency in designing, deploying, and managing building control systems.

Interoperability and Portability

A core principle of universal automation is the ability to create interoperable and portable automation software that can run across different vendors’ hardware. This is typically accomplished by using open standards like IEC 61499, which allows for “plug-and-produce” automation components that work across platforms.

Key Benefits

Universal automation in BAS offers several advantages:

  • Flexibility: Systems can be more easily reconfigured and updated without being tied to specific hardware.
  • Efficiency: Reduces engineering time and complexity by allowing reuse of software components across projects.
  • Innovation: Frees up engineers to focus on creating value rather than dealing with proprietary system limitations.
  • Cost-effectiveness: Extends hardware lifespan and reduces the need for full system replacements.
  • Integration with IT Systems

Universal automation facilitates better integration between operational technology (OT) systems like building controls and information technology (IT) systems. This allows for more advanced data analytics, cloud connectivity, and smart building capabilities.

Industry Collaboration

The move towards universal automation is being driven by industry collaboration through organizations like UniversalAutomation.org, which manages shared implementations of automation standards. This collaborative approach aims to create an ecosystem of interoperable building automation solutions.

By adopting universal automation principles, BAS can become more agile, efficient, and future-proof, enabling smarter and more sustainable building management practices.
