9th & 10th States Adopting Fluorescent Lamp Bans

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz signed into law a bill including a “clean lighting” provision phasing out fluorescent tubes in favor of LEDs. Senate File 3345, authored by Senator Mitchell, and House File 3326, authored by Representative Hemmingsen-Jaeger, will end the sale of fluorescent lamps in Minnesota, effective in 2025 for screw- or bayonet-base compact fluorescent lamps, and in 2026 for the slightly more specialized pin-based linear or compact fluorescent lamps. Minnesota became the 9th state with a fluorescent lamp ban. The Minnesota Senate bill language can be viewed here.

A similar bill passed the House and Senate in Illinois and awaits the Illinois governor’s signature. The Illinois House bill language can be viewed here. Illinois is expected to become the 10th state to enact a fluorescent lamp ban.
