A street light has just set a new record for the highest TM66 product circularity score, in the UK. It is the Oaken street light, manufacturered by Thorlux Road and Tunnel (TRT) Lighting, in the UK, with a TM66 score of 3.1. The CISBE TM66 circularity standard is designed to measure the carbon footprint of a luminaire from construction to end-of-life disposal.
The Oaken is designed for disassembly, recyclability, and repurposing at the end of its life. Some of the key sustainability features of the Oaken include:
- The European oak housing is made from kiln-dried planks of laminate oak from PEFC certified forests. The wood has been 650oC and 850oC hot-wire tested. TRT says the wood housing has a 20 year life, even under extreme weather conditions. The wooden housing reduces embodied carbon by 97% compared to a standard aluminum cast alloy housing.
- 100% post-industrial recycled polycarbonate optic cover (IP66).
- LED module efficacy of 191.7 lumens per watt. Driver efficiency up to 92%, with 2 DC channels. The two channels allow either of two luminaire power options to be selected during manufacturing. A NFC remote control can scan a QR code to select the preferred wattage. The wooden housing allows the NFC remote to radio the driver without opening the luminaire.
- The gear tray and mounting post are both made from >90% recycled aluminium sheets.
- Highly efficient PMMA & PC lens options
Overall, the luminaire reduces embodied carbon by 50% compared to a standard street light. More information can be found here.
