The 2023 National Electric Code (NEC) language initially banned battery-only wall light switches. However, the NFPA published a Temporary Interim Amendment to the 2023 NEC that now allows some battery-only wall light switches IF they incorporate a positive means of notification of impending battery depletion.
LightNOW published a story on May 4, 2023: 2023 NEC Prohibits Battery-Only Wall Light Switches. Today’s post is an update and correction to last year’s prohibition story. The NEC amendment was issued November 30, 2023, and became effective December 20, 2023. The revised section 210.70 now reads:
210.70 Lighting Outlets Required. Lighting outlets shall be installed where specified in 210.70(A), (B), and (C). The switch or listed wall-mounted control device shall not rely exclusively on battery power unless it incorporates a positive means of notification of impending battery depletion.
