Amazon dominates retail e-commerce but not B2B e-commerce. Here is a closer look:
- Amazon dominates retail e-commerce with $431 Billion in sales projected this year. Amazon’s retail Ecom market share is 37.6%. In second place is Walmart with $73.5 Billion in retail e-commerce sales, 1/6 that of Amazon.
- Amazon’s top retail e-comm categories are computers & electronics; apparel & accessories; furniture & home furnishings; books, music, & video; and health & personal care.
- Third-party marketplace sales generate over half of Amazon’s total sales. Retail marketplace e-commerce sales will represent over a third of total retail e-commerce sales in the US, by 2027.
- Amazon is in 3rd place for online ad sales at $34 Billion, behind Alphabet and Meta. Amazon’s share is growing, however, while the other two are currently losing market share.
- Amazon has big plans for incorporating generative AI features into its ecom business. See the bottom graphic. This represents another area for Amazon to outpace competitors.
- AmazonBusiness, the B2B e-comm arm of Amazon, is projected to hit $43 Billion this year, which is only 2.3% of all B2B e-comm sales. AmazonBusiness is expanding into Europe and other new markets. Total B2B e-comm sales are expected to break $2 Trillion in 2024. There is no one dominant player in B2B e-comm today.
