Lighting Standard Offers Performance Specifications for LED Lamps

The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) recently published ANSI C78.53-2019 American National Standard for Electric Lamps—Performance Specifications for Direct Replacement LED (Light Emitting Diode) Lamps. Written for a primary audience of LED lamp manufacturers, this new standard describes the electrical, mechanical, and photometric characteristics of LED lamps that are direct replacements for existing ANSI standardized non-LED lamps.

“This important new Standard identifies key characteristics of direct replacement LED lamps that should be available to consumers and application specialists. It covers general direct replacement LED lamps and specific requirements for direct replacement LED lamps used in tubular fluorescent and high-intensity discharge (HID) ballasted systems,” said Andrew Jackson, manager, Lighting Test Center Americas Signify North America Corporation, and chair of the ANSI Electric Lamp Committee. “This Standard provides information to help manufacturers better select and compare products for specific applications, limiting confusion about LED direct replacement lamp performance in existing luminaires and systems.”

ANSI C78.53-2019 is available for $79 in hard copy and electronic download on the NEMA website here.
