Detroit Sues Leotek Electronics Over Failed Streetlights

The City of Detroit has filed a lawsuit against California-based LED lighting manufacturer Leotek Electronics USA, claiming more than 20,000 of the 25,000+ streetlights purchased and installed less than five years ago are failing, with the manufacturer refusing to honor its 10-year warranty.

In contrast, luminaires purchased from Cree, Cooper, and King are “performing to industry standards and expectations,” according to the filing in the U.S. District Court in Eastern Michigan.

Detroit’s Public Lighting Authority also stated it believes the products were made in Taiwan, whereas it requested they be made in the United States.

Leotek’s response to the court is that it has not received sufficient documentation from the Public Lighting Authority.
