LEDVANCE Announces Winner of UC Davis Annual Design Competition

LEDVANCE supported this year’s annual LED design competition at UC Davis Department of Design with the latest in SYLVANIA SMART+ lighting. Design students at UC Davis developed and prototyped actual luminaires that use these controllable LED sources to explore issues associated with optics, color control, and human interface design. The winner was Jennifer Place, who recently graduated with a double major in Art History and Design.

The annual lighting design competition focused on the development of LED luminaires as a product design and prototyping experience for undergraduates at UC Davis. This design class introduced learning experiences associated with advanced technology, prototyping, and the development and testing of LED luminaire products. The annual design competition culminated in a final presentation hosted at the California Lighting Technology Center and attended by a cross-section of leading designers and architects in the lighting profession as judges. To experiment with in their luminaire design project, LEDVANCE donated lights and wireless controls.

“The original prompt for the class was to create a fixture utilizing indirect light. However, I was taken by the flexible nature of the SYLVANIA SMART+ LED strips and asked if I could instead create a fixture design that could highlight that feature,” said Place. “My professor rightfully warned me about many of the issues that often come with moving fixtures, but in the end everyone was happy if not pleasantly surprised by the outcome!”

“Everyone at LEDVANCE was very impressed with Jennifer’s design,” said Omar A. Rivera, Head of Luminaires for United States and Canada, LEDVANCE. “It was very creative and almost seemed alive with its nature-like flexibility. The way the luminaire’s flexibility helped control the level levels was very interesting, and of course the use of controllable SYLVANIA SMART+ lighting added a level of high tech that appeals to the new generation.”

The annual LED design competition was taught by Professor Michael Siminovitch, Rosenfeld chair in the Department of Design at UC Davis.
