Eighty years ago, physicists theorized that light could be converted into matter. The scientists, who later participated in the development of the first atom bomb, considered converting light into matter an impossibility in a lab.
Recently, however, physicists at Imperial College London say they have it figured out in principle–using high-powered lasers and other devices. And they’ll be able to do it in a lab within a year.
