The Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) honored the finalists of the 2015 IES Illumination Awards and presented IES Society Awards for Technical and Service Achievement at the IES Annual Conference in Indianapolis, IN November 8 – 10.
The IES Illumination Awards included five Awards of Distinction, ten Awards of Excellence, and four Special Citations. The Awards program recognizes individuals for professionalism, ingenuity and originality in lighting design based on the individual merit of each entry. The Award of Distinction honors extraordinary achievement in lighting design. The Award of Excellence is presented for an exceptional contribution to the art and science of lighting design. The Special Citation recognizes superior elements of a project or, in some instances, the use of lighting as an art form.

Also at the conference:
IES Louis B. Marks Award is presented to a member of the Society in recognition of exceptional service to the Society of a non-technical nature. This year’s recipient is Lewis S. Sternberg.
Medal Award is awarded to recognize meritorious technical achievement that has conspicuously furthered the profession, art or knowledge of illumination engineering. The Medal award was given to Alan L. Lewis.
Taylor Technical Talent Award is granted each year to honor a paper detailing research work which furthers the application knowledge of lighting practice. The 2015 recipient was given to authors Ronald Gibbons, Feng Guo, Alejandra Medina, Travis Terry, Jianhe Du, Paul Lutkevich, and Qing Li for their research paper, Impact of Roadway Lighting on Crash Safety.
Distinguished Service Award is given to those who have performed at least fifteen years of dedicated service to the Society. Recipients of this year’s Distinguished Service Award were Robert Bridges, Nancy Clanton, and Alan Lewis.
IES Presidential Awards are given at the discretion of the IES President to individuals or groups for exemplary efforts and support during the President’s term. Past President, Paul Mercier awarded the following individuals for their contributions to the Society: Nick Bleeker, FX Morin, Fred Hasler, Richard Larivee, Brian Liebel, Ardra Zinkon, Rita Harrold, and Bruce Sohl.
IES Fellow is a membership designation to recognize IES members for their valuable contributions to the technical activities of the Society and to the art and science of illumination or to a directly related scientific field. Individuals are elected by the IES Board of Fellows. IES Fellow membership was awarded to John Green, Guy Newsham, Randy Burkett, and Lisa Heschong.
Howard S Brandston Student Lighting Design Education Grants encourage and recognize students who have evidenced professional promise through presentation of an original and ingenious solution to a supplied lighting design problem. The recipients of these awards for 2015 were Sean Poulicek and Nathan Ritta, both the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. 2015 Honorable Mention was given to Sean O’Neil and Jesse Rathod, both at Pennsylvania State University.
IES Young Professionals Scholarship Fund supports the attendance of students and emerging professionals at the IES Annual Conference. Recipients of the 2015 Young Professionals Fund were Kelsey Cahill, Darcy Engle, Zhe Kong, Rania Labib, Kathleen Menyhart, Anahi Narro Villa, Nathan Ritta, and Rebecca Sturniolo.
