UC Davis wins best-practice award for lighting

The University of California, Davis, recently received a best-practice award for its adaptive exterior lighting system at this year’s California Higher Education Sustainability Conference (CHESC) held in June. The smart lighting network consists of more than 1,500 dimmable LED luminaires, occupancy sensors, and a radio-frequency network control system, and is saving UC Davis an estimated 1 million kWh and $100,000 annually.

Russ Leslie, associate director and professor at the Lighting Research Center at Rensselaer, along with Leora Radetsky, research scientist, and Aaron Smith, former research specialist, have been awarded the prestigious Leon Gaster Award from the Society of Light and Lighting for the paper, “Conceptual Design Metrics for Daylighting” published in LIGHTING RESEARCH & TECHNOLOGY last year. The paper proposes a new metric (the “daylighting dashboard”) to help architects and builders more easily take advantage of the benefits of daylighting.
