THE LIGHTING PROFESSION
The IES is endeavoring to provide support for those people who may be ready, both professionally and technically, to take the exam. To this end, the IES LC Study Group has engaged experienced lighting educators to lead and prepare materials for the study group. The materials, instruction, practice exams, reference materials, and any notes available, are not provided or endorsed by NCQLP. The content and structure of the Study Group is entirely prepared and offered by the IES. All materials provided are subject to copyright approval by the IES.
LC STUDY GROUP STRUCTURE
The IES LC Study Group (2013) is an online, web-based program which will start on Monday, August 26, 2013 and end on Wednesday, October 30, 2013, just prior to the exam date set by the NCQLP. This program is intended to guide and assist those lighting practitioners who have made a commitment to take the exam offered by NCQLP. The IES is in no way affiliated with, and does not coordinate, the NCQLP in any manner. Enrollment in the LC Study Group is not mandatory in order to take the NCQLP exam.
PROCESS
The LC candidate must proceed through several steps in order to be enrolled in the LC Study Group, as outlined below. The progression through the steps is conditional, that is, if one step is not successful, then the applicant may not be processed through to enroll in the LC Study Group. Applicants are screened for commitment and appropriate working experience in lighting. If an applicant is considered to be not fully prepared, they will be given the recommendation to wait until the 2014 exam date (or even later), and utilize the time to improve areas of knowledge that may be lacking.
The LC Study Group enrollment steps are:
1. NCQLP Candidate registers and pays for the exam through www.ncqlp.org.
2. Proof of payment for the NCQLP exam is forwarded to pmcgillicuddy@ies.org along with your resume.
3. The candidate will then receive instructions to take a short survey quiz, which outlines the candidates lighting background and knowledge.
4. The survey will be reviewed by the LC Study Group Leaders, and a determination will be made as to the preparation readiness of the candidate.
5. Upon acceptance into the study group, instructions will be forwarded from the IES regarding payment for the LC Study Group and applicable discounts on the Recommended (not required!) reading list.
6. If the applicant is not accepted, a short description of the areas of learning that are missing will be forwarded.
NOTE: APPLICANTS FOR THE IES LC STUDY GROUP MUST REGISTER INDIVIDUALLY AND PERSONALLY. REGISTRATION and/or PAYMENT BY THIRD PARTIES WILL NOT BE PROCESSED, EITHER FOR THE STUDY GROUP OR THE RECOMMENDED READING LIST.
GENERAL RECOMMENDATIONS
It is strongly recommended that any applicants proceed with these steps as soon as possible. Procuring and reviewing the reading list is a time-sensitive task, and a critical part of the LC Study Group. Reviewing the reading material is best done prior to the onset of the LC Study Group (i.e., this Summer). The LC Study Group should be considered a review, and not a class in which the applicant has little knowledge of a particular subject.
The online web meetings will utilize a standard internet web-type meeting, using either standard telephone, or VOIP computer audio. A technical test session will be held one week prior to the first LC Study Group session, so that any log-on issues can be discovered and resolved.
Each web meeting session will be recorded, and the recordings posted so that you can re-listen to the session, or if there is an unforeseen circumstance where you cannot attend. There will be two sessions a week (from late August through late October 2013). The first session (Monday evenings from 7:30-9 pm ET) will be more content based, and led by Dr. Craig Bernecker; the second session will be a group forum, with practice tests, review of resources, focus on individual issues/questions – led by Dan Rogers, LC. (See Schedule below).
For the 2013 IES LC Study Group, only the IES Lighting Handbook, 10th Edition will be available as a downloadable PDF. All other reference materials will be print copies. An IES LC Study Group participant may purchase any document desired (no minimum) – nothing is required. To purchase the documents with the study group discount, the applicant must successfully go through the steps outlined above.
After the NCQLP candidate is approved for participation in the LC Study Group, a unique code will be issued to each individual to purchase the reading materials using the LC Study Group discount. For questions, please contact pmcgillicuddy@ies.org.
NOTE: REGISTRATION FOR THE LC STUDY GROUP AND THE READING LIST DISCOUNT WILL EXPIRE SEPTEMBER 6, 2013.
