POSITION DESCRIPTION:
Seattle City Light’s Conservation Resources Division is currently hiring for a Manager for the Lighting Design Lab (LDL). Beginning in 1989, the LDL worked to transform the Northwest lighting market by promoting quality design and energy efficient technologies via education and training, consultations, technical assistance, and demonstrations. This lab is operated by Seattle City Light with support from northwest regional utilities and the Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance. The LDL offers resources, information, and training on energy efficient lighting technologies and effective lighting design to architects, lighting designers and contractors, utility personnel and other lighting industry participants throughout Seattle City Light’s service territory and the Pacific Northwest Region.
The Lighting Design Lab Manager oversees a dynamic technical resource for the region’s conservation and lighting community, and supervises 5 professional and technical staff. In this role, the Lighting Design Lab Manager will be expected to provide strategic leadership and promote excellent customer service to the utility’s customers of this unique and celebrated facility.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
As a direct report to the Conservation Resources Division Director and key member for the Division’s leadership team, you will manage and promote the operation of the Lighting Design Lab, as well as lead a team of knowledgeable staff.
* Oversee the operations of the Lighting Design Lab, a 7,400 sf facility located in South Seattle. Manage the Street and Area Outdoor Lighting Center at South Seattle Community College, including working toward achieving financial self sustainability.
* Provide effective leadership to LDL staff and carry out personnel duties including hiring, supervising, employee development and mentorship, as well as performance reviews and expectations.
* Serve as a technical expert within the region and build strong working relationships with customers, contractors, engineers, developers, and building owners.
* Seek opportunities for collaborations and partnerships between the LDL and the energy efficient lighting industry, Puget Sound and regional utilities, local or regional organizations, and other City departments.
* Conduct seminars on energy management and speak to community groups and organizations regarding energy conservation and City Light’s energy conservation programs.
* Utilize technical expertise to support in the development and implement the mission, vision and strategic plan for the Lighting Design Lab.
* Design the annual work program for the LDL. Implement strategic training plans, consultation partnerships with regional customers, and arrange lighting displays and demonstration at the LDL.
* Develop and manage the annual budget for the LDL (approx. $1M) and manage contracts and oversee purchasing. Negotiate yearly funding with current sponsoring utilities, as well as identify and negotiate new funding methods and sources.
* Energetically cultivate effective team work, working relationships, and communication within the LDL and the Conservation Resources Division.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Requires a Bachelor’s degree in Public Administration, Business Administration, Economics, Engineering or a related field.
Experience: Four years increasingly responsible professional experience in program management, energy conservation management, planning, or analysis, with at least two years work experience in professional energy management analysis or energy planning analysis. (Or a combination of education and training and experience which provides an equivalent background to perform the required work.)
Certification/License: Driver’s License or equivalent mobility.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
Desired Qualifications: Experience developing a strategic plan for a customer-service organization and demonstrated success in implementation. Strong knowledge of effective lighting design and energy conservation principles, concepts and measures; specifically, as they apply to energy efficiency lighting technologies and measures. Strong program management skills, including some experience planning, organizing, problem-solving and program implementation.
Ability to effectively lead a team of energy professionals. Skilled and experienced in successfully supervising and motivating professional and technical employees. Ability to coach employees, encourage teamwork and promote high standards of customer service. Experience with budgets and/or financial management. Experience working with multiple stakeholders, vendors, and customers. Experience negotiating contracts and/or other agreements. Excellent oral, written and presentation skills. Strong interpersonal skills, ability to work with people from diverse professional, cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. Ability to adapt to shifting and multiple priorities and work in a goal-oriented environment. Familiarity with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Access.
