Lighting Retrofit and Relighting by James R. Benya and Donna J. Leban, published by Wiley (ISBN: 978-0-470-56841-5, hardcover, 312 pages) in March, provides a comprehensive guide to planning and implementing lighting retrofits to increase energy efficiency and improve lighting quality.
The book begins by outlining the benefits of retrofitting, then discusses when retrofits make sense, the entire retrofit process—from the data collection phase to maintenance—and explains the latest retrofit technologies and lighting system types. The book:
* discusses the recent advances in lighting equiment and retrofittable controls, indoor and outdoor;
* explains how to do a lighting audit to identify and evaluate logical retrofit choices;
* includes case studies of retrofits, illustrating improvements in the quality and efficacy of lighting; and
* demonstrates how cost savings realized over time can not only pay for new equipment, but produce a satisfying return on investment.
This reference would be useful for any professional or student that will deal with a lighting retrofit project—whether as a designer, installer, manager, manufacturer, or consultant.
This is a stellar effort by Benya and Leban. The information is extremely well organized and presented in a simple, straightforward manner, making easy to read linearly or as a desktop reference. A professional at most levels of knowledge, including facility managers, would find it comprehensible and useful. While redesign of existing spaces is not within the book’s scope, it covers its intended subject–retrofit–extremely well. Recommended.
