GE’s incandescent halogen lamps hit the shelves nationwide today—clear and Reveal® clear versions (MSRP $5-$7)—in two-packs in 29W, 43W, 53W and 72W varieties that dim and turn on instantly like their 40W, 60W, 75W and 100W incandescent bulb counterparts that are phasing out of production between 2012 and 2014 as a result of the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007. The rated life of the new halogen lamps is 1,000 hours, the same as or longer than incandescent bulbs, and the light output in lumens comes in at 430 for the 29W (vs. 490 for a 40W incandescent), 750 for the 43W (vs. 840 for a 60W incandescent), 1050 for the 53W (vs. 1190 for a 75W incandescent) and 1490 for the 72W (vs. 1690 for a 100W incandescent).
Within the next few years, incandescent lamps will have to achieve a higher standard of efficiency or be eliminated. It’s pretty simple. If you don’t like compact fluorescent lamps, use halogen instead.
