NEMA’s shipment indexes for linear fluorescent T5, T8, and T12 lamps increased during the third quarter of 2010. T5 lamps showed the largest rate of growth, advancing 6.6 percent, while T8s and T12s registered more modest gains of 0.6 and 0.1 percent, respectively. The T5 index grew 48.7 percent from a year ago and has reached a new high of 163.4. A year-over-year increase in T8 shipments of 6.8 percent nudged the index to 102.7 while the index value for T12 lamps (70.1) represented a decline of 8.8 percent from a year ago.
Despite the annual decline in shipments, the share of T12 lamps increased by over four percentage points during the quarter reaching 30.4 percent. This is likely not to continue as the July 1, 2010 phase-out of magnetic ballasts has not yet had the full effect on T12 shipments. The market share for T5 lamps decreased slightly to 7.3 percent while T8 lamps remained dominant with a 62.2 percent share of total shipments.
