The U.S. Department of Energy has published a report covering a demonstration project involving LED retrofit lamps installed at the InterContinental Hotel in San Francisco, CA. The report, developed under DOE’s GATEWAY program, covers lighting performance, economic performance and projected energy savings. Halogen wall-grazing luminaires, track lights, and recessed downlights in the lobby and other common areas were retrofitted with 6W LED MR-16 or 11W LED PAR30 replacement lamps.
Key findings included:
* About 70% energy savings
* Simple payback estimated at 1.1 years, in part due to the very high relamping labor costs in San Francisco
* User feedback indicated that the LED lamps delivered warm lighting that flattered interior finishes and skin tones and duplicated the original lighting design intent without distracting glare or flicker
