In the spring of 2011, The Lighting Quotient and the Illuminating Engineers Society will award a $2,500 scholarship to one student who demonstrates creativity, vision and knowledge in the field of architectural lighting. This award honors the legacy of lighting pioneer and IES member Sylvan R. Shemitz, FIES. As founder of Sylvan R. Shemitz Designs, Inc., now known as The Lighting Quotient, Schemitz patented many major innovations in asymmetric lighting, including elliptipar and tambient, and invented the first single-source task/ambient lighting solution.
The call for entries is now open. To apply, students must visit The Lighting Quotient website and submit a lighting plan along with a 250-word written statement of the objectives and goals of the lighting design concept. The full submission process is outlined here. The deadline for submitting is March 15, 2011.
