Lighting for Tomorrow Residential Product Award Winners Announced

The eighth annual Lighting for Tomorrow competition awarded the best-designed energy-efficient lighting products in the residential market. In addition to the expansion of the solid-state lighting (SSL) competition to include replacement lamps, 2010 featured a brand new lighting controls competition. Lighting for Tomorrow challenged manufacturers to continue to improve their design of SSL fixtures and enter high-quality LED replacement lamps that would meet consumers’ expectations. And for the first time, Lighting for Tomorrow invited lighting control manufacturers to enter lighting control devices with the requirement that they be compatible with energy efficient technologies, such as fluorescent and LEDs. The 2010 judging panel reviewed a total of 107 products, 69 SSL luminaires, 24 LED replacement lamps, and 14 lighting control devices at the California Lighting Technology Center in Davis, CA.

Thirty-three companies submitted SSL fixtures; five received some type of recognition. Four winners were selected: past winner, Kichler Lighting received two awards, one for its Design Pro LED Broad Roof LED Path & Spread Light and the other for its Design Pro LED Modular and Disc System. Edge Lighting also received two awards for its Scope LED Pendant and Scope LED Monorail / Track Light. The remaining manufacturers received honorable mentions for their entries. Colorado-based Albeo Technologies Inc. with its Agito – Intelligent Task Light and Blackstone International Ltd. for its Sunter Architect LED Desk Lamp. Past winner, Cree LED Lighting also received an honorable mention for their CR6™ Downlight.

Twelve companies submitted LED replacement lamps, however only one entrant was recognized as a winner. Manufacturer, Philips received an award for its EduraLED™A19 Lamp.

Of the five companies that competed in the new lighting controls competition, three different manufacturers were recognized. Leviton Manufacturing Co., Inc. received an award for the Decora® CFL Slide Dimmer. Lutron Electronics Co., Inc. also received an award for the Radio Powr Savr™ Occupancy/Vacancy Sensor with Maestro Wireless® Switch and Legrand/ Pass & Seymour was recognized for the RT1 7-Button Timer.

Awards were presented at the American Lighting Association Annual Conference in Las Vegas, NV on September 22. The competition is designed to stimulate the market for attractive, energy-efficient residential lighting fixtures that use a fraction of the electricity of standard incandescent fixtures. By encouraging new designs and technologies, Lighting for Tomorrow aims to increase market acceptance and awareness of the growing opportunities in energy-efficient lighting.

Winners will be showcased in two publications: 1) a SSL Brochure, highlighting the LED-based winners, and 2) a Lighting Controls Brochure, featuring the lighting controls winners. In addition, the winning products and companies will be featured in articles and trade show exhibits throughout the coming year.
