The Lighting Controls Association has published an article I authored about performance-based approaches to commercial building energy codes.
This code approach is more directly linked to actual or expected energy use, potentially allow maximum component tradeoff flexibility between building systems, are considered a way to achieve higher energy savings, and can more easily accommodate alternative energy features such as renewable energy. Some lighting designers prefer it out of a belief it will ease up on the emphasis on lighting power density as the sole metric. Energy policy makers are showing interest because it may generate more energy savings.
The approach has its benefits. But is it practical?
Check it out here.
