L Prize Field Assessments Slated for Summer 2010

The Department of Energy is getting ready to ship out more than 1,400 samples of the first L Prize entry, a Philips product intended to replace 60W incandescent lamps, to 14 L Prize partners across the country. These partners are preparing to install the sample products in more than 40 planned locations and will collect data on energy usage, light levels, and user perceptions:

  • BC Hydro: Municipal building wall mounts and table lamps; corporate boardroom lighting fixtures
  • Cape Light Compact: Kitchen, bath, or table lamp in single and multi-family residences
  • Commonwealth Edison: Elevator lights, community center pendants; hotel rooms and common areas
  • DTE Energy: Hospital lamps; hotel hallways and reception area; car dealership ceiling fixtures
  • Efficiency Vermont: Wall fixtures at housing authority
  • Eugene Water & Electric Board: Art museum downlights
  • Midwest Energy Efficiency Alliance: Pendants and sconces in offices; commercial retail ceiling fixtures
  • National Grid: Apartment building common areas and hallways; restaurant pendants
  • Platte River Power Authority: Residential chandeliers, table lamps; restaurant cooler or kitchen; hotel bathroom
  • Progress Energy: Residential ceiling fixtures and table lamps; restaurant pendants
  • Puget Sound Energy: Customer homes; multi-family housing common areas; coffee shop; café; small grocery
  • Sacramento Municipal Utility District: Grocery store pendants, catwalk; utility technology center
  • Southern California Edison: Hotel common areas and sleeping rooms, table lamps, wall and ceiling fixtures
  • Wisconsin’s Focus on Energy program: Restaurant pendant, cooler; hotel meeting rooms and common areas; senior living facility

The performance results and user feedback from each demo will be compiled and analyzed to determine whether the first entry qualifies for the prize.

Meanwhile, initial photometric testing concludes this month at two CALiPER-qualified labs and long-term testing will begin.
