IDA Prefers Warm White LEDs to Reduce Impact on Nocturnal Environment

The International Dark-Sky Association has issued a Specifier Bulletin for Dark Sky Applications titled, “Achievements in High Brightness White LED Devices.”

The first Specifier Bulletin of 2010 recognizes manufacturers of high brightness white LEDs that achieve high efficacy while considering quality of light.

IDA states:

“The method of manufacturing high brightness white LEDs by coating blue LEDs with phosphors inherently leads to relatively high emission of short wavelength light.

“Warm toned white LEDs are preferred in aesthetic tests and reduce impact to the nocturnal environment potentially caused by high concentrations of short wavelength light.

“These LED designs sacrifice little efficacy, with some products emitting fewer blue wavelengths than HID lamps. The featured manufacturers are propelling the market for LEDs forward while demonstrating the possibilities of LED technology.”
