The Department of Energy released the April Electric Power Monthly Report today reflecting January data. Highlights:
• In January 2010, total electric power generation in the United States increased 1.4% from January 2009.
• Retail sales of electricity increased 3.4% compared to January 2009.
• The average U.S. retail price of electricity decreased 3.8% in January 2010 compared to the previous year.
The January average retail price/kWh data has not yet found its way to this page, but we can see from the December 2009 data that:
• The average price per kWh for commercial customers was 9.73 cents, 3.3% lower than December 2008.
• The average price per kWh for industrial customers was 6.52 cents, 2.2% lower than December 2008.
Electricity prices are declining because demand is down because the economy is down.
