The Department of Energy has released the final report from a demonstration of LED residential street lighting in Portland, OR. In this project, eight 100W high-pressure sodium cobrahead luminaires were replaced with LED street light luminaires.
The report provides an overview of project results, including lighting performance, economics and potential energy savings. Here are a few key findings. Measured energy savings were 55%, but average light levels were reduced 53% (which more closely meets the level specified for residential street lighting by the City). Ten out of 11 respondents in a resident survey noticed no difference, or thought the LEDs improved lighting quality. The estimated payback was about 7.6 years for a new project and 20 years if a replacement project.
