Architectural SSL Covers KFC/Taco Bell That Uses Almost All White LED Lighting

Yum! Brands, parent of KFC, Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, Long John Silver’s and other brands, is the world’s largest restaurant company with more than 36,000 restaurants in over 110 countries. As part of its efforts to demonstrate social responsibility, Yum! unveiled its first LEED Gold-certified restaurant, a KFC/Taco Bell in Northampton, Mass., in 2008. The new location, designed by Chipman Adams Architects to use 30% less energy and water than a conventional building.

The project’s energy-efficient lighting design, produced by Derry Berrigan, principal of DBLD, Rogers, Ark., incorporates not only daylight and advanced lighting controls, but almost 100% white LED lighting throughout the restaurant. The interior lighting achieves 46% energy savings compared to a system meeting the requirements of the ASHRAE 90.1-2007 energy standard, while the exterior lighting achieves 77% energy savings. Overall, the lighting contributed to the building realizing an energy reduction of 81% compared to a baseline restaurant.

“Well-designed lighting systems create contrast and interest, provide wayfinding and complement visitors,” says Berrigan. “The result should be a comfortable, inviting space that makes people feel good.”
