“Designing with Light” is a studio course in the Design Department at UC Davis taught by Professor Michael Siminovitch, director of the California Lighting Technology Center.
Students enrolled in the 2009 course design, develop and prototype a fully working LED-based lighting fixture for the Annual LED Luminaire Design Competition. Students use a development kit of products provided by Arrow Electronics, Magtech Industries, OPTEK Technology, OSRAM Opto Semiconductors and Tyco Electronics.
On March 18, designs were evaluated on the creative use of LED technology and overall functionality and design by a panel of judges including CLTC and supplier representatives.
Winning designs will be displayed at Lightfair International 2009 in the OSRAM Opto Semiconductor LED Gallery (Booth #1609) in New York City.
The course looks like a blast. Maybe one day these courses will be available online…
