“Pixel Cloud” Light Installation

Jason Bruges Studio, a UK-based studio producing interactive light sculpture and environments, was commissioned to create a lighting art feature for a 10-story atrium in Allen & Overy’s new headquarters at 1 Bishop’s Square, London.

The Studio produced an eight-story 3D chandelier comprised entirely of individually addressable LED light globes developed with manufacturer Ledon, controlled using custom software and held in place by cabling that supports the piece while also enabling transmission of power and data.

The Bitside control system reads RSS weather feeds and generates visuals based on precipitation, temperature and wind speed outside. The installation also has the ability to play back 3D video on a very large scale.

“I was attracted to light as an artistic medium as it is so versatile, it can be controlled and manipulated, and it is very ephemeral and also hard to define at the same time,” says Bruges. “It can be magical, different every time it finds a new context. Is the key player in a multi-sensorial environment; it affects primeval responses to those experiencing it—where people wake up by it, work by it, and tell time by it.”
